Freelander

Freelander

Description : Land Rover Freelander is Land Rovers most recent addition to it's range and is a radical departure from earlier Land Rover's. The Freelander uses a monocoque bodyshell instead of the trusty ladder chassis as used in previous Land Rover's, making it extremely lightweight. Also instead of a live axle system, the Freelander has fully independant wishbone suspension, as well as ABS, Traction Control, and something called a Hill Descent Control. This is the biggest difference between the Freelander and other Land Rovers.

These systems when used together replace the normal transfer box found in earlier Land Rovers. The HDC (Hill Descent Control) is used to pulse the ABS braking system when going down steep hills in order to allow the vehicle to descend the hill at a safe controlled pace. The Traction Control system puts power to the wheels with the most grip to stop the vehicle from wheelspinning and getting stuck in muddy or slippery terrain, whilst the ABS system can brake a wheel that has lost traction (or left the ground) so that the opposite side wheel will still turn regardless of the operation of the axles differential. So basically the Freelander is still a very capable off-roader even though it doesn't have the conventional systems normally used by four wheel drive vehicles.

This Freelander is the 3 door soft top version with all the extra sporty bits of trim on the side
